6/1/15 - 6/5/15
Monday 6/1 - Today we summarized/reviewed our answers from Thursday & Friday's Problem 2.1. We agreed that to add decimals, we needed to add the same place values. One strategy is to line up (stack) the decimals vertically, then like any addition problem, add right to left, so that we can carry over if needed. We then rated our learning on the daily learning chart, then looked at Problem 2.2, subtracting with decimals. HW: Complete using estimation first, then find an exact answer using the algorithm developed in class, problems A# 1 - 4.
Tuesday 6/2 - Today we worked through Problem 2.2 & summarized. Subtracting is very similar to adding decimals. The only difference is borrowing. HW: Complete Problem 2.2 if not finished.
Wednesdsay 6/3 - We started class by rating our learning on the daily learning chart for Day 2 (2.2) and moving our magnets. We then watched a short video clip about fact families, and began working with our tablemates to answer the question, "Are there are fact families with decimal numbers?" HW: Finish Problem 2.3 if not finished.
Thursday 6/4 - We wrapped up any lingering questions from Problem 2.3, rated our learning for Day 3 on the Daily Learning Charts, turned those in for a grade, then began Problem 3.1. HW: Finish Problem 3.1
Friday 6/5 - Today we discussed our answers to Problem 3.1 as a class, after checking answers with tablemates. HW: Finish Problem 3.1 if not done, or anything else that's not done. :)

5/25/15 - 5/29/15
Monday 5/25 - Memorial Day--No School
Tuesday 5/26 - Today we worked together on Problem 1.2, where we used estimation for decimal operations in real life situations. We talked about how this is useful when we are spending money, to make sure that we have enough before we get to the register. :) HW: Finish Problem 1.2
Wednesday 5/27 - Today we worked through unit rates of various speeds, trail mix parts, & comparing ice cream prices. The big idea is that we are dividing & we are guided by the units. For instance, if we want miles/hour for 100 miles in 2 hours, we divide the miles by the hours, 100 miles/2 hours = 50 mph. This means that we traveled 50 miles in 1 hour. HW: Finish Problem 1.3 if not done, then do ACE p. 17 # 24 - 26 (4th hr will turn in last week's ACE #1 and # 27 tomorrow as well)
Thursday 5/28 - Today we turned in last night's homework & our daily learning charts from investigation 1. We then looked at the goals & scales for this new investigation & rated our learning at day 0. Our new problem 2.1 involved sorting cards into equivalent piles, then putting them in increasing order, & creating new cards that would be equivalent for each pile. HW: Students should work on Problem 2.1 A - C #2
Friday 5/29 - Today we shared on the board our ideas from Part A for a discussion on Monday. We also worked to complete our packet 2.1 HW: None. :) Happy Weekend!

HW: Play math games online for at least 15 min on Sat & Sun. Please come to class with fully charged netbook. Testing begins Tuesday of next week.
3/23/15 - 3/25/15 (Short Week...half day Thursday, no school Friday - Monday, April 6, Spring Break back to school Tuesday 4/7)
Monday 3/23 - Today we summarized Problem 3.1 (Area of Parallelogram = base x height), added parallelogram formulas to yellow formula sheet in back of dictionary, and investigated nets that form into 1 x 1 x 1 cubes. HW: Problem 4.1 A & B
Tuesday 3/24 - Today we discussed the many ways to make a net of a cube (part A), identified that they all have a surface area of 6 (6 faces, with area of 1 sq. cm), then looked at the labsheet nets (part B) that were cut out & folded into boxes. We identified the fold lines, the 3-dimensions of each (length, width, height), and talked about the 6 "faces" (sides) dimensions of the boxes. The faces are 2- dimensions, so we recorded the length x width of each, labeling them front, back, top, bottom, left, right. We realized that we are always using the 2 of the 3 dimensions of the box, just different combinations. We also noticed that the front & back dimensions were the same, the top & bottom were the same, and the left & right side dimensions were the same. HW: Finish Problem 4.1 if not done & begin Problem 4.2
Wednesday 3/25 - Today we summarized Problem 4.1 (how we find surface area), then discussed Problem 4.1 A (the 3 dimensions of a figure, ways to find their volumes, and how to find their surface areas). HW: p. 90 # 20, 21 Half day tomorrow, done at 11:01
Thursday 3/26 - Students had shortened classes today. We added definitions to our dictionaries, discussed last night's homework, and all students were given a sheet with their NWEA scores from 6th grade. On the back is a website where they can go to play math games that will build their skills based on their NWEA scores. HW: Over break, please have students play the math games on the website for at least 20 min. each day. If it disappeared, open the document below, labeled, "nwea practice by rit scores". Have a great break, see you Tuesday, April 7th.

Tuesday 3/10 - We continued Problem 1.1 today in class. HW: Problem 1.1 part C
Wednesday 3/11 - We summarized Problem 1.1 by answering our focus question, what formulas can we use to find area & perimeter. This brings us from a zero to a one on the learning scale if we didn't already know it! The fraction tests were handed back, then recollected. (I have to keep them). If you'd like a copy of the rubric with your child's grade, I can scan it & email it to you. Students began Problem 2.1 with tablemates. HW: ACE p. 14 # 2 - 6, 24, 25
Thursday 3/12 - We spent quite a bit of time today discussing our big ideas from the homework last night that as the rectangle stretches out, it has a greater perimeter due to exposed edges. The more the rectangle is condensed (square-like), the smaller the perimeter, due to less exposed edges. HW: Students should complete Problem 2.1 A & B, ACE problems p. 20 # 30, 31
Friday 3/13 - Today we began with a discussion of the homework, with a reminder that if we are stuck, we should always try to make sense of it with a model. Students were sent home with grid paper, to experiment with a given side length & try out different widths to make the given perimeter. (Some students remembered the formula for perimeter & were able to make sense of it that way as well). That homework from last night will be due Tuesday, so that students have more time to make sense of it, now that they have more ideas. We then made sure everyone had all possibilities written down for part A in Problem 2.1 (there should've been 8 because we counted the reversals as well), then talked about B and really made sure that we had an understanding of graphing for part C. HW: Check your grades online & if you don't like what you see, get cracking on missing assignments! ;) Have a good weekend! :)

Thursday 2/12 - SNOWDAY
Friday 2/13 - (Trojan Pride) We went over the strategies that we used to solve the homework from p. 55. We stressed the importance of having more than one strategy because our test over fractions will have story problems. Students will need to be able to make sense of what the question is asking before they can solve. If students have more than one strategy for solving (like drawing an area model), then they will be better equipped to solve. We also checked our learning with Exit Ticket 3.1. HW: Check grades on PowerSchool & turn in any missing work. Parents, please continue to be vigilent about checking to see that homework is being done each evening Monday - Thursday. Many students are coming without homework completed.

1/19/15 - 1/23/15 (short week)
Monday 1/19 - No School in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tuesday 1/20 - We worked as a team, then shared our answers from Problem 1.4 B & C spice problems. HW: Finish Problem 1.4 & make sure binder is in order for upcoming surprise binder check (see the handout "lbr_inv_1_binder_check.docx" above for specifics on organization).
Wednesday 1/21 - We shared our answers from the homework, then worked as a team to create a poster for assigned homework problems. Tomorrow we will circulate the room critiquing the reasoning of our classmates & look for strategies for adding & subtracting fractions. HW: Be prepared for "exhibit" tomorrow; each person has a different job to prepare for! :)
Thursday 1/22 - (1/2 day...last day of semester) We circulated the room today, critiquing the thinking & strategies used by our classmates. HW: Play math games to build skills in adding & subtracting fractions for our book Let's Be Rational http://moodle.tcaps.net/mod/page/view.php?id=90609 & be sure that binder is organized for binder check.
Friday 1/23 - No School
1/12/15 - 1/16/15
Monday 1/12 - We began Problem 1.2 today where we used overestimation & underestimation, depending on the situation. HW: Finish Problem 1.2 WKT & fix NWEA goals.
Tuesday 1/13 - We turned in NWEA goals, wrapped up Problem 1.2, rated our learning with an exit ticket, moved our magnets, and began thinking about Problem 1.3. This problem revolves around land owned by various people, who buy & sell land that is different sizes to their neighbors. This will move us into developing strategies for finding exact sums & differences of fractions with different denominators. HW: Use the 1.3 Labsheet to find the fraction of a section owned by each person.
Wednesday 1/14 - We shared our strategies for finding the fraction of a section owned by each person. We decided that the strategy that worked the best was to look at the smallest piece owned, divide the section into those pieces (the denominator), then count how many of them made up the land owned (the numerator). We began Problem 1.3 B in class, talking about how we need to answer all 4 bullets for questions B & C. HW: Finish Problem 1.3 WKT using the 1.3 Labsheet.
Thursday 1/15 - We shared our answers from the Problem 1.3 WKT, then identified the strategies that we used to add those fractional parts. We realized that to add & subtract parts of the land, they need to be divided into equal pieces, meaning the same denominators. HW: Using the labsheet for part A, complete ACE problem #27 on p. 20.
Friday 1/16 - We discussed our homework, talked about adding strategies that didn't work & why, then we started Problem 1.4 & completed A1 estimating recipes. HW: None, unless missing work...please check PowerSchool...Double check that binders are organized for binder check next week... Happy 3-day Weekend!! :)
1/5/15 - 1/9/15 (Welcome back to school & a new year!!)

We discussed a possible answer to #1b homework last night. HW: Finish last night's HW & do p. 35 # 41, 42.
Thursday 10/23- We passed back Prime Time tests, went over questions, talked about my grading rubric for the test, how to calculate the percentage from the fraction (good math skill!), and what grade corresponds with what percentage. We graphed our learning for Investigation 4 in Prime Time to practice. We'll do this for the remainder of the year as a visual that, yes we are learning, & growing brain cells! :) We discussed how to calculate the fraction from a bar graph in our homework & how 1/4 can look different depending on how big the class is. HW: Birthday questions...calculate the dates of your 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, & 1/6 birthdays.
Friday 10/24- We looked at Problem 1.1 again & identified which statements were comparisons with ratios, fractions, or differences. Then we looked at the homework from Tuesday p. 27 #1 & classified those statements. HW: If you are missing any of this week's HW, finish it this weekend, so I can have it graded to be part of midterm grades (due Thursday 10/30).
10/13/14 - 10/17/14:
Monday 10/13- We read p. 71 & 72 in our Prime Time books & discussed the order of operations. We worked through Problem 4.3 in our classwork & discussed A. We are planning on a test for Friday, so keep binders in order because the test is open book, open note, & students are allowed to use calculators. HW: Students will finish Problem 4.3 (classwork packet) if it didn't get done in class & p. 76 #13 - 18. Also, if Problem 4.2 is not complete, that needs to be done by Friday.
Tuesday 10/14- We went over the homework which had letter variables in them! This was very new & unsettling to the students. We also looked at the Problem 4.3 order of operations. HW: p. 78 # 24 - 27, 43, 44
Wednesday 10/15- Today we entered definitions into our dictionaries for distributive property, dimensions, equivalent expressions, & expressions. Students can get those definitions from a neighbor. We also took notes on how to use the distributive property with subtraction. Tonight we will practice order of operations more in the homework assignment. HW: p. 78 # 28 - 31, make sure binders are in order for Friday's test
Thursday 10/16- Test tomorrow...study by doing the Study Guide...bring your binder & calculator to school tomorrow! :)
Friday 10/17- Went over the study guide to clarify last minute questions, then began the test. No HW, other than to look over study guide sometime Sunday to refresh memory for finishing test Monday.
10/6/14 - 10/ 10/14:
Monday 10/6- Today we read p. 48 & 49 in the Prime Time Book comparing two different student ideas for finding the LCM & GCF. We liked Derrick's method because it seemed a bit shorter. Students will practice using Derrick's method on p. 55 # 21 - 25 on tonight's homework.
Tuesday 10/7- We went over the homework, turned it in, then worked to get our binders in order. We also began the Math Reflections Sheet 3. HW: Finish Math Reflections 3 & be sure that binders are in order.
Wednesday 10/8- I passed back Monday's homework, did a quick check on binders, & students used Venn Diagrams as a visual for shared factors. HW: Use Venn Diagrams on p. 55 # 21 - 25.
Thursday 10/9- HW: p. 75 # 7 - 12
Friday 10/10- Mrs. Murphy absent. No HW. :)
9/29/14 - 10/3/14:
Monday 9/29- Today we talked about the importance of doing homework & turning it in on time, as well as writing your name, hour, & page number. We also talked about neatness, writing problem numbers to the left of the red lineI passed out grade sheets so that students could see the impact of zero scores on their overall grade. We then worked through the problem 2.3 sheet about snack packs & using Greatest Common Factors to solve real problems. HW: Get late homework turned in by tomorrow.
Tuesday 9/30- Today we began Investigation 3 Finding Factor Strings. HW: Find as many factor strings as you can on the labsheet without repeating. You may not be able to fill in every line! Please bring a water bottle if you are thirsty so you don't have to miss class to get a drink.
Wednesday 10/1- HW: p. 54 # 5 - 10
Thursday 10/2- Students are bringing home midterm reports today. Please ask to see them. :) HW: p. 54 # 11 - 15 (#14: no exponents on # 5 - 10; just do exponents on # 11 - 13)
Friday 10/3- No homework other than if a student is behind, then do any missing assignments. Also, any extra practice with multiplication tables at home would make math a lot easier! Have a good weekend! See you Monday!
9/22/14 - 9/26/14:
Monday 9/22-Today we went over emergency procedures, we filled in our new dictionaries with vocabulary from Investigation 1, and we went over the binder grades & expectation/organization of our binders...HW: Fix your binders if your grade was below 5 out of 5 points.
Tuesday 9/23- Today we filled in our dictionaries with the words odd, even, divisor, & relatively prime number, then we learned about using LCMs to help us in solving a problem (Problem 2.1 WKT). HW: p. 34 # 1 - 8.
Wednesday 9/24- Today Mrs. M. was absent at a training. We worked on Problem 2.2 WKT. HW: p. 34 # 14, 28, & 31
Thursday 9/25- Today Mrs. M. was absent at a training. We had a discussion about last night's homework. HW: p.34 # 16 - 21
Friday 9/26- Mrs. M. is back! We discussed homework confusion (GCF vs. LCM) & turned in homework from all week. No homework over the weekend. :)
9/15/14 - 9/19/14:
Monday 9/15- review your classwork in the binder & the vocabulary meanings of factors, divisors, proper factors, prime numbers, composite numbers, multiples, and square numbers for a check up quiz on Tuesday.
Tuesday 9/16- Check-up quiz in class....no homework, other than charge your laptops & bring them in tomorrow for the NWEA test.
Wednesday 9/17- NWEA test...charge your laptop & bring in tomorrow for NWEA test
Thursday 9/18- NWEA test...no homework
Friday 9/19- no homework
9/2/14 - 9/12/14: We did not have any graded homework. Mostly the 6th graders were settling into their new home here at East and learning our routines, remembering the paths to classes on A and B days, to bring all materials to class, etc..
